    Cooperatively Extending the Range of Indoor Localisation

    ̶Whilst access to location based information has been mostly possible in the\ud outdoor arena through the use of GPS, the provision of accurate positioning estimations and\ud broad coverage in the indoor environment has proven somewhat problematic to deliver.\ud Considering more time is spent in the indoor environment, the requirement for a solution is\ud obvious. The topography of an indoor location with its many walls, doors, pillars, ceilings\ud and floors etc. muffling the signals to \from mobile devices and their tracking devices, is one\ud of the many barriers to implementation. Moreover the cha racteristically noisy behaviour of\ud wireless devices such as Bluetooth headsets, cordless phones and microwaves can cause\ud interference as they all operate in the same band as Wi -Fi devices. The limited range of\ud tracking devices such as Wireless Access Point s (AP), and the restrictions surrounding their\ud positioning within a buildings’ infrastructure further exacerbate this issue, these difficulties\ud provide a fertile research area at present.\ud The genesis for this research is the inability of an indoor location based system (LBS) to\ud locate devices beyond the range of the fixed tracking devices. The hypothesis advocates a\ud solution that extends the range of Indoor LBS using Mobile Devices at the extremities of\ud Cells that have a priori knowledge of their location, and utilizing these devices to ascertain\ud the location of devices beyond the range of the fixed tracking device. This results in a\ud cooperative localisation technique where participating devices come together to aid in the\ud determination of location of device s which otherwise would be out of scope

    The results of a design study resulting in the proposed CONDOR aircraft are presented. The basic requirements are for the aircraft to maintain continuous altitude at or above 45,000 feet for at least a 3-day mission, be able to comfortably support a two-man crew during this period with their field of vision not obstructed to a significant degree, carry a payload of 200 pounds, and provide a power supply to the payload of 2000 watts. The take-off and landing distances must be below 5000. feet, and time to reach cruise altitude must not exceed 3 hours. The subjects discussed are configuration selection, structural analysis, stability and control, crew and payload accomodations, and economic estimates

    Social Participation and Navigation with Adolescent and Young Adult Brain Tumor Survivors: Usability and Potential Benefits

    Background: This study examined the usability and potential benefits of Social Participation and Navigation (SPAN), a virtual coaching goal planning intervention, which was modified for adolescent and young adult (AYA) brain tumor survivors who often experience social participation challenges. Methods: Four AYA brain tumor survivors participated in a brief trial of the modified SPAN consisting of four weekly coaching sessions with trained supervised occupational therapy graduate students and use of a website and web application to assist with goal planning and achievement. The participants rated their social participation and SPAN-specific skills pre/post program. The participants and parents completed 1-week and 1-month usability surveys post program. Effect sizes were computed to examine pre/post score changes. Descriptive statistics and content analyses were used to examine quantitative and qualitative usability data. Results: SPAN was well-received by the AYAs, parents, and coaches with high satisfaction ratings for coaching. All participants achieved at least one goal. The participants had increased post-intervention scores in social participation (overall, school, community) and SPAN skills (goal planning, self-regulation, reciprocal communication). Suggestions for improvement primarily focused on the SPAN web application. Conclusion: The results demonstrated the usability and potential benefits of SPAN for AYA brain tumor survivors and have informed a larger implementation trial

    High intensity interval exercise increases the frequency of peripheral PD-1+ CD8+ central memory T-cells and soluble PD-L1 in humans

    Exercise can exert anti-inflammatory effects in an intensity-dependent manner; however, the mechanisms mediating these effects are continually being established. Programme Death Receptor-1 (PD-1) is a membrane bound receptor that maintains immune tolerance by dampening immune cell interactions, such as those mediated by cytotoxic T-cell lymphocytes (CD8+). The aim of this study was to characterise sub-populations of CD8+ T-cells with regards to their expression of PD-1 before and immediately after exercise. Interleukin (IL)-6, soluble PD-1 (sPD-1) and its ligand (sPD-L1) were also quantified in plasma. Eight individuals (mean ± SD: age 29 ± 5 years; BMI 24.2 ± 3.4 kg.m2; O2max 44.5 ± 6.4 ml·kg-1·min-1) undertook two time and energy-matched cycling bouts in a counterbalanced study design: one of moderate intensity (MOD) and a bout of high intensity interval exercise (HIIE). Both MOD and HIIE increased the number, but not the proportion of circulating CD8+ PD-1+ cells, with no differences between trials. Within the CD8+ PD-1+ pool, the expression of PD-1 increased on central memory cells following HIIE only (fold change: MOD 1.0 vs HIIE +1.4), as well the concentration of CD8+PD-1+ memory cells within the circulation (cells/uL: MOD -0.4 vs HIIE +5.8). This response composed a very small part of the exercise-induced CD8+ lymphocytosis (Pre-Ex: 0.38% to Post-Ex: 0.69%; p>.05). sPD-L1 and IL-6 concentration increased in tandem following MOD and HIIE (r=0.57; P=0.021), with a reciprocal decline in sPD-1 observed. The current data demonstrate that PD-1+ CD8+ lymphocytes were mobilised following both MOD and HIIE. Both the number of central memory CD8+ T-cells expressing PD-1 and the expression level on these cells were increased following HIIE only. This intensity-dependent phenotypic response, in conjunction with increased circulatory sPD-L1 may represent an aspect of the anti-inflammatory response to exercise and warrants further investigation

    One week of magnesium supplementation lowers IL-6, muscle soreness and increases post-exercise blood glucose in response to downhill running

    Purpose: Magnesium supplementation modulates glucose metabolism and inflammation, which could influence exercise performance and recovery. This study investigated magnesium intake on physiological responses and performance during eccentric exercise and recovery. Methods: Nine male recreational runners completed a counterbalanced, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study, registered at ClinicalTrial.gov. Participants consumed low magnesium diets and were supplemented with 500 mg/day of magnesium (SUP) or placebo (CON) for 7-days prior to a 10 km downhill (-10%) running time-trial (TT), separated by a 2-week washout period. At baseline and 24 hrs post TT maximal muscle force was measured. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), soluble interleukin-6 receptor (sIL-6R) and creatine kinase (CK) were measured at rest, 0 hr, 1 hr and 24 hrs post TT. Muscle soreness was measured at the previous times plus 48 hrs and 72 hrs post. Glucose and lactate were measured during the TT. Results: Main effect of condition were detected for IL-6 (SUP: 1.36 ± 0.66 vs CON: 2.06 ± 1.14 pg/ml) (P < 0.05, η2 = 0.54), sIL-6R (SUP: 27615 ± 8446 vs CON: 24368 ± 7806 pg/ml) (P < 0.05, η2 = 0.41) and muscle soreness (P < 0.01, η2 = 0.67). Recovery of blood glucose and muscle soreness were enhanced in SUP post TT. There were no differences in glucose and lactate during the TT, or post measures of CK and maximal muscle force. Conclusion: Magnesium supplementation reduced the IL-6 response, enhanced recovery of blood glucose, and muscle soreness after strenuous exercise, but did not improve performance or functional measures of recovery

    Association of collective attitudes and contraceptive practice in nine sub-Saharan African countries.

    BACKGROUND: There is ample evidence that gender norms affect contraceptive practice; however, data are mostly qualitative with limited geographical scope. We investigated that association quantitatively using collective community-level attitudes towards premarital sex and wife-beating as proxies for gender norms. METHODS: Data came from nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys (2005-2009) for women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in nine sub-Saharan African countries. Using multilevel logistic models, controlling for individual covariates and community-level indicators of women's empowerment, we assessed the community-level association of gender norms regarding premarital sex and wife-beating with individual contraception uptake and demand satisfied among fecund sexually active women. Norms were approximated as 'collective attitudinal norms' from female/male residents (aged 15-49 years) from the same community. We assessed the magnitude and significance of the community-level effects and attributed variance across communities. The same analysis was replicated for each country. RESULTS: In a fully-adjusted model with a pooled sample of 24?404 adolescent women, the odds of contraception use increased with a 1 standard deviation (SD) increase in the variation of collective permissive attitudes towards premarital sex of female (odds ratio (OR)?=?1.08, 95% confidence interval (CI)?=?1.02-1.15) and male (OR?=?1.11, 95% CI?=?1.05-1.17) peers (15-24 years), while odds of contraceptive use declined by 10% (OR?=?0.90, 95% CI?=?0.85-0.96) with collective accepting attitudes towards wife-beating of women aged 15-49 years. Similar results were found in separate models that controlled for adults' permissive attitudes towards premarital sex. The community-level attributed variance (V2?=?1.62, 95% CI?=?1.45-1.80) represented 33% (intra-class correlation (ICC)?=?33.0, 95% CI?=?30.0-35.4) of the total variation of contraception use, and attitudes towards premarital sex and violence jointly explained nearly 26% of that V2 variance. The community-level shared of attributed variation of contraceptive use varied significantly across countries, from 3.5% in Swaziland (ICC?=?3.5, 95% CI?=?0.8-13.7) to 60.2% in Nigeria (OR?=?60.2, 95% CI?=?56.0-64.2). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, significant positive associations of collective permissive attitudes of both adolescent and adult women towards premarital sex were found for use of, and demand for, contraception, whereas collective accepting attitudes towards wife-beating were negatively associated with the use and demand for contraception. Ours is the first study to define quantitatively the influence of proxies for gender norms at the community level on women's family planning decisions. These findings offer new insights for understanding the role of sex-related attitudes and norms as important factors in shaping contraceptive practices and improving the effectiveness of family planning policies by targeting individuals as well as their groups of influence
